Coffee Storage

Coffee storage has a huge effect on the flavour and quality of brewed coffees. Freshness is, ultimately, the deciding factor in the taste of coffee. Exposure to oxygen, light, heat and moisture reduces the freshness of coffee and therefore, also affects the taste of coffee.

Coffe must be allowed to release the carbon dioxide (CO2) which develops inside the bean as a reult of the roasting process, or it will not have a good taste. This process is called de-gassing. The packaging used here at The Java Factory incorporates a one-way valve which allows the CO2 to escape the bag while preventing oxygen from entering, maximizing the freshness of the coffee.

Coffee beans will retain its freshness longer than ground coffee, because the beans expose less surface area to the air. Ground coffee, because of it's greater surface area, is also more likely to absorb odours it is exposed to, which will often be present once the coffee is brewed.

At Home Storage:

The best way to store coffee at home is in bean form. This is not always possible, as not everyone owns a grinder, but whether the coffee is in bean or ground form it should be kept in its original Java Factory packaging and placed in a cool dry place. After opening the package you should only take out as much coffee as needed then remove as much oxygen as possible before resealing the bag. This will help keep your coffee at its best for longer.

Storing Coffee in the Freezer

Medium or lighter roasted coffee beans can be stored in the freezer. Only the beans you are going to use should be taken out and the air should be removed from the packaging before you put it back in the freezer. Do not allow the beans to thaw and be refrozen as this will change the flavour of your coffee.

Dark roasts should not be frozen, because the oils on the surface of the beans often congeal and never regain their original consistency, changing the flavour of your coffee

Ground coffee should also NOT be stored in the freezer. Its greater surface area allows the warm moist air to condense whenever the container is opened, changing the flavour of your coffee.

Storing coffee in the Fridge

Coffee should not be stored in the fridge. The moist air and odours in your fridge will enter the coffee packaging everytime it is opened, changing the flavour of your coffee.

It is best to buy small amounts of fresh roasted coffee beans and grind it as needed. Come and visit any of our locations, we always have fresh roasted coffee as it is so popular it never lasts long on our shelves!!
